2013 Professional Paper Award Winners Announced

ASSE’s Editorial Review Board has selected the recipients of the 2013 Professional Paper Awards, which recognize members whose articles were published in Professional Safety in 2012.  This year’s recipients are Bruce Lyon and Bruce Hollcroft, first place; Tracey Cekada, second place; and James Harris and Richard Current, third place.

HollcroftFINALLyonFINALBruce Lyon, P.E., CSP, ARM, CHMM, (left) and Bruce Hollcroft, CSP, ARM, CHMM, (right) both work as directors of risk control with Hays Companies and co-authored Risk Assessments: Top 10 Pitfalls & Tips for Improvement, which appeared in the December 2012 issue of Professional Safety. The first-place winning article discusses how to optimize risk assessment by avoiding 10 common pitfalls and following the guidance of consensus standards.



Second-place winner Tracey Cekada, D.Sc., CSP, is an associate professor in the Safety Sciences Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her article, Training a Multigenerational Workforce: Understanding Key Needs & Learning Styles, was published in the March 2012 issue of Professional Safety and explores how understanding generational differences can improve workplace collaboration, communication and training.




James Harris, Ph.D., P.E., (left) and Richard Current, P.E., (right) who work as research safety engineers at NIOSH received the third-place award. Their article, Machine Safety: New & Updated Consensus Standards, appeared in the May 2012 issue of Professional Safety and identifies changes to the ANSI B11.0 and B11.19 standards that affect risk assessment processes, matrices and references as well as machine guarding performance requirements.
