ASSE Continues Its Growth in India

With an official launch of ASSE’s second chapter in the state of Maharashtra and prelaunch of the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana chapters, ASSE is building a strong foundation in a country poised for explosive economic growth. ASSE President Trish Ennis, CSP, ARM, and ASSE Executive Director Fred Fortman, LL.M., CAE, attended an official chapter-launching ceremony on Jan. 22, 2015, and a technical symposium that followed on Jan. 23-24 in Pune, India. The event was sponsored by Underwriters Laboratories of Bengaluru and D.L. Shah Trust of Mumbai, and supported by the chief guest, Honorable Mr. Baldev Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Industries, Energy and Environment, Government of Maharashtra, India. The prelaunch events in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh state, and Hyderabad, Telangana state, took place Jan. 19 and 20, respectively, and were attended by many dignitaries, delegates and students.

ASSE growth in India began in 2012 when the Society launched the ASSE India Chapter in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu state. To build momentum and establish these chapters, ASSE Ambassadors Jitu Patel and Ashok Garlapati have worked closely with OSH professionals in India, including ASSE international member Ajay Sachdeva, managing director, Corporate Governance Advisory Services, Rahul Jagtap (Maharashtra), Madhu Burra (Andhra Pradesh) and Maddhu Chalan (Telangana). The country’s growing population and economy demand matching inputs from OSH professionals in terms of technical and advisory services, safety equipment and products, training and skill development, competence enhancement, promotion and advocacy, inspections and audits and much more. ASSE aims to encourage professional growth in India that will focus on the human and environmental issues that form the core of ASSE’s global mission to protect people, property and the environment.

Professional development has been identified as key to that growth. To meet that need, the Society conducted its first professional development conference in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in May 2014. Safety India 2015 is slated to run Oct. 15-17 in Mumbai, in the state of Maharashtra. For more information, visit
