ASSE Editorial Review Board Announces Professional Paper Awards

ASSE’s Editorial Review Board has announced the 2014 Professional Paper Awards, which recognize members whose articles were published in Professional Safety in 2013.  This year’s recipients are Darryl C. Hill and Kathy A. Seabrook, first place; Fred A. Manuele, second place; and David W. Wilbanks, third place.

SeabrookHillDarryl C. Hill, Ph.D., CSP, vice president global corporate health and safety at Johnson Controls, and Kathy A. Seabrook, CSP, CFIOSH, EurOSHM, president of Global Solutions Inc., coauthored “Safety and Sustainability: Understanding the Business Value,” which was published in the June 2013 issue. The first-placed winning article makes the case for safety and sustainability, explaining how SH&E professionals can align their organization’s safety and health initiatives with existing sustainability strategies. Hill is a professional member of the Greater Detroit Chapter, and Seabrook is a professional member of the New Jersey Chapter.

ManueleSecond-place winner Fred A. Manuele, P.E., CSP, wrote “Preventing Serious Injuries and Fatalities: Time for a Sociotechnical Model for an Operational Risk Management System,” which was published in the May 2013 issue. The article argues that major and somewhat drastic innovations in the focus of occupational risk management systems are needed to improve fatality and serious injury prevention. Manuele is president of Hazards Limited and is a professional member of the Northeastern Illinois Chapter.

 

WilbanksDavid W. Wilbanks, M.P.H., CSP, CRSP, wrote the third-place winning article, “Preventing Major Injuries: Observations on Theory, Models and a Path Ahead,” which appeared in the November 2013 issue. The article examines past and current theories to identify lessons and actions that can be reliably incorporated to lower the likelihood and severity of major injury incidents, regardless of external factors. Wilbanks, corporate safety manager, downstream operations at Gerdau Long Steel North America, is a professional member of ASSE’s West Florida Chapter.
