From Dec. 9-11, 2015, ASSE’s Kuwait Chapter celebrated its 15th anniversary while hosting its 8th International HSSE and Loss Prevention Professional Development Conference (PDC) and Exposition in Kuwait City. Conducted under the patronage of Kuwait’s Minister of Oil, the PDC was the chapter’s largest yet, drawing nearly 400 attendees and more than 30 exhibitors. Some of Kuwait’s largest companies—including Kuwait Oil Co. (KOC), Kuwait National Petroleum Corp. (KNPC), EQUATE and RIMSCO—sponsored the event.

Sheikh Talal Al Sabah, acting undersecretary, Minister of Oil, State of Kuwait, and Kuwait Chapter Chair Fadhel Al Ali, opened the event. Highlights of the 2-day conference included the Executive Panel, a wide-ranging discussion featuring ASSE President Michael Belcher, CSP; Mohammad Husain, president and CEO, EQUATE; Mohammad Ghazi Al Mutairi, CEO, KNPC; Ismail Abdullah, deputy CEO, KOC; symposia on process safety management and sustainable energy; and 68 technical papers on topics such as occupational health, fire safety, loss prevention, industrial security and ergonomics. The chapter also presented its 2015 Safety Professional of the Year Award to Riaz Mohammed Shareef.

The event also featured a special after-hours session for more than 100 members who were unable to attend the conference due to daytime work commitments. During this session, ASSE President Belcher shared information on the Society’s global outreach programs and helped the chapter honor Ashok Garlapati, a member of the Kuwait Chapter since its inception in 2000; Garlapati was recently elected the Society’s first-ever global region vice president.

While in Kuwait, Belcher and Yassie Dunn, ASSE’s manager for global growth and development, attended a meeting of the Kuwait Chapter’s WISE group and toured a KOC waste treatment facility that was a finalist in the Green Technologies Category in Kuwait Sustainable Energy Awards 2015. Garlapati and Kuwait Chapter President G. Sampath Reddy facilitated the tour, which gave participants an up-close view of a cutting-edge technology that eliminates drill cutting waste.

Since its inception in 2000, the Kuwait Chapter has been one of ASSE’s most active global chapters. Its high-quality programs and initiatives serve as a model for other global chapters to follow.
