ASSE Nigeria Chapter Gearing Up for 3rd Annual PDC

ASSE’s Nigeria Chapter will hold its 3rd annual professional development conference March 16-18, 2016, in Lagos. According to Chapter President-Elect Herbert Nwaka, the theme for this year’s event is “Safety Advocacy and Conformance for a Sustainable Society.” The chapter is anticipating that sessions on topics such as risk management, leadership, safety culture and training will extend its ongoing efforts to bring greater awareness to the importance of occupational safety and health. “Our first two conferences were an excellent opportunity for us to deliver local content while also bringing in international speakers to share information and knowledge, and share information about ASSE,” Nwaka says. “We have learned much from previous events and have incorporated those lessons into our planning of this conference.”

Nwaka notes that building awareness of ASSE is one of the chapter’s major goals. “We are expanding our efforts to reach more people in areas outside the major cities and we are growing interest in participation from people from all over the country. We are having some success in building participation in education and information sharing.” Events such as the PDC also help chapter members explain the benefits of joining so that more OSH professionals in Nigeria appreciate how much being an ASSE member can help them improve their careers.
