ASSE Stresses Role of OSH Professionals in Statement on OSHA’s Recommended Practices for Safety & Health Programs

osha_shp_recommended_practicesOSHA published the long-awaited update to its Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs Oct. 18. In its statement about the guidelines, ASSE stresses the important role OSH professionals play in helping employers manage the many complex risks found in today’s workplaces.

The Society also shares its concerns that the recommended practices do not sufficiently explain when employers should seek professional OSH skills and knowledge. “Like first-aid manuals that tell when medical personnel should be called, a tool that encourages untrained people to practice facets of safety should also clearly address when professional help is required.”

safesound_osha_logoTo support widespread use of the practices, OSHA launched the Safe + Sound Campaign for Safety and Health Programs. ASSE is a campaign cosponsor and will work with OSHA to promote the availability of the recommended practices and will develop resources that aim to help employers implement effective controls for their unique risks.
