ASSE’s Leadership Conference: Where Membership Experience Comes Together

Perhaps these words from Maribeth Anderson, Council on Region Affairs Vice President, best sum up what ASSE’s annual Leadership Conference is all about: “Collectively, that’s how we succeed.”

The 2017 conference took place in Rosemont, IL, on Oct. 12-14. During the conference, 221 volunteer leaders from ASSE’s chapter, practice specialty and common interest group communities gathered to network, learn and strengthen their connections with ASSE. Workshops focused on leadership development and the practical skills they need to fulfill their roles.

Best-selling author David Marquet was this year’s keynote speaker. A former submarine commander, Marquet is an expert on leadership and organizational design. During his keynote, attendees learned how Marquet’s experience commanding the nuclear-powered submarine USS Santa Fe helped change his leadership approach from a traditional “take control, give orders” style to one that gives control by regarding the crew as leaders instead of followers.

Continuing the giving back tradition, this year’s conference attendees put together more than 200 care packages that will be distributed to homeless veterans during the 2017 Winter Stand Down, organized by the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. This effort was made possible by the generous donations of chapters, regions and individual members.
