BCSP Releases SMS Certification

BCSP completed the beta test of its safety management specialist (SMS) certification and is now offering the certification as part of its offerings.

The SMS certification is for safety practitioners who possess the skills, knowledge and experience required to manage a business’s safe operation. Examples of an SMS’s activities include defining and utilizing an organization’s safety management systems; risk management; identifying the business case for safety; and incident investigation and emergency preparedness.

ASSE member Heather Earl, CSP, was a participant in the beta exam, which she passed. This makes her, and the other successful beta testers, among the first to receive the new certification. Earl decided to become part of the beta exam because the SMS certification is closely aligned with her role at her current organization. Additionally, holding another BCSP credential would bring more credibility to her and her company. “I wanted to fully understand the credential so that I can continue to mentor folks through BCSP, WISE [ASSE’s Women in Safety Engineering Common Interest Group] and within my own organization,” Earl says.

BCSP began to develop the certification in July 2016, when a panel of subject-matter experts outlined the knowledge and skills their industries require of safety managers and specialists. Visit BCSP’s website to find a guide on the certification, its exam blueprint and the blueprint references.
