Chesapeake Chapter Sponsors 4H Safety Event

ASSE’s Chesapeake Chapter is doing its part to introduce the next generation to the SH&E profession and ASSE. The chapter has sponsored another year of the 2013 Carroll County MD-4H AG Tractor & Lawn Tractor Safety event where kids share their knowledge and skills while learning safety techniques and best practices. For the past 5 years, the chapter has sponsored the Champion and Reserve Champion awards presented during the event. This year’s awards were book bags and baseball hats with the chapter’s ASSE logo, as well as T-shirts for all contestants and judges.

Competing contestants start the Hazardous Occupations Safety Training in Agriculture curriculum or the Tractor Safety Program curriculum in January, then finish classes in late March. From that time until the county fair in late July, they work on demonstrations and practice with their tractors to perfect their skills. 4-H Youth Development provides tractor and machinery certification for youth 14 years and older. This certification allows 14- and 15-year-olds to legally operate tractors and machinery while off their family’s farm. Youth younger than 14 can participate, but are not eligible for certification.

At the annual event, all contestants must give a 5- to 10-minute demonstration on related topics. Grant Shaw presented a lockout/tagout (LOTO) demonstration that included LOTO devices and a board showing their proper use. He received the award of Intermediate Champion, Lawn Tractor.
