(as of April 25, 2013). This beats a previous record of 8.33 in. in April of 1947. Many areas of Illinois saw massive flooding that caused evacuations, sand bagging and businesses temporarily closing, including ASSE headquarters. The office was forced to close April 18-19 due to excessive flooding surrounding the building and throughout Des Plaines. The water level did not reach inside the building, but the surrounding streets and parking lot were affected.

The delegation was headed by Zhao Jinming, Vice Counsel Gansu provincial administration of work safety. The chapter outreached to Vince Miller, Region VI Vice President and Yassie Dunn, ASSE Manager, Global Growth and Development, to help with plans.

On April 5, 2013, the Chinese delegation from the province of Gansu met with ASSE members in Virginia. The NOVA Chapter, represented by Vincent P. Courtemanche, President and David Wenzel, President-Elect, gave presentations on construction safety and SH&E from a local government agency and challenges for their fields. In addition, Miller provided an overview of ASSE, the Society and its member resources, including the Body of Knowledge system, and an overview of all the SH&E courses upcoming at our PDC. Zhao’s primary interest was in the mining and construction area and pollution control. The delegation was amazed at the wide area of presenters and the resources our membership had available to them. The group, through the Triway interpreters, had an hour of interactive discussions.

The March 2013 issue of OSHA’s Alliance Quarterly Review acknowledges and commends ASSE’s response efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. In the aftermath of the storm, ASSE reached out to its membership and encouraged them to donate personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety gear for recovery worker preparing for the cleanup.

As OSHA conducted it’s own outreach, ASSE’s regional offices’ collected cases upon cases of donated equipment from safety professionals and companies across the country. The ASSE Foundation (ASSEF) contributed to the “Sandy PPE Fund” given to ASSE’s New York City Chapter for the purchase of PPE that chapter members then distributed to recovery workers. In addition to the funding from ASSEF, the New York City Chapter held a fundraiser on Nov. 29, 2012, raising $5,000 in contributions.

ASSE President Rick Pollock, CSP, thanked ASSE members for their efforts. “This opportunity to work with OSHA to help recovery workers be safe as they helped communities restore their homes and businesses impacted by Hurricane Sandy is a testament to the empathy of ASSE members. As SH&E professionals, they understand the potential dangers to workers repairing infrastructure elements while helping people put their lives back together,” said Pollock. “I’m proud to be able to thank ASSE’s members for this remarkable response.”

Each year, the event benefits ASSEF research and education initiatives, giving you the opportunity to support the future of the profession while enjoying a little friendly competition, scenic views and networking with peers. This year’s outing will be held at Badlands Golf Club, featuring 27 holes nestled against the breathtaking views of the Red Rock canyons.

If golf isn’t your game, you can also support the Foundation by participating in the 19th Annual Silent Auction, to be held at Safety 2013, June 24-27. For Safety 2013, the Foundation will debut a new mobile auction, enabling our supporters to participate from anywhere. A complete catalogue of items will be accessible to anyone, and real-time bidding ensures opportunity for every bidder to win his/her prize. The auction will open in mid-June and registration, bidding and payment can all be completed online. Your company can help support the profession too by making a donation online.
