Foundation Announces Liberty Mutual Fellows

Lora Cavuoto, Ph.D., of Buffalo, NY, and Denny Yu, of Ann Arbor, MI, are the recipients of ASSE Foundation’s 2013 Liberty Mutual Insurance Safety Research Fellowship Program. Both will spend 4 to 6 weeks this summer at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety in Hopkinton, MA, while working on their projects. Cavuoto, an assistant professor at University at Buffalo, SUNY, will be evaluating the effect of obesity on motivation differences using near-infrared spectroscopy and the implications for physical work. Yu, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Michigan, will be researching biomechanical limits to one-handed pulling, and investigating the effects of force direction, postures and balance on strength variations among and within subjects.

Both recipients will receive a stipend for living expenses while conducing their research, and they will be asked to write an article for the Foundation’s The Advocate or for Professional Safety explaining their research results.
