ISO 45001 Nears Publication

The long-awaited ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems standard may be published as soon as the first half of 2018.

ISO has announced a provisional publication date of Nov. 27, 2017, for the final draft international standard (FDIS). The ISO PC-283 Committee and ISO member countries will review and vote on this final draft.

ASSE expects the standard to be approved and anticipates publication during the first half of 2018. ASSE serves as Administrator of the U.S. committee (Technical Advisory Group, TAG) to ANSI for the proposed standard. The TAG advises ANSI on voting positions and submits technical and professional comments addressing the proposed standard.

British Standards Institute (BSI) has announced that upon publication of ISO 45001, it will withdraw OHSAS 18001, BSI’s occupational health and safety management systems standard, giving organizations 3 years to migrate to ISO 45001.

ANSI/ASSE Z10, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, will remain active. ASSE believes that Z10 fulfills a need for organizations seeking to implement a management system, and allows firms to choose between ISO 45001 and Z10 depending on their specific needs and circumstances.
