James Thornton Receives ISEA Distinguished Service Award

j-thornton_vpofprofessionalaffairsJames R. Thornton, CSP, CIH, is the recipient of International Safety Equipment Association’s (ISEA) 2016 Robert B. Hurley Distinguished Service Award.

Thornton is director of environmental health and safety for Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries. The award, named after Robert Hurley, former CEO of Fendall Inc. and ISEA board member, is presented each year to someone who has advanced and promoted workplace safety and health.

“The Distinguished Service Award is reserved for a special individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement and promotion of workplace safety and health,” says ISEA President Daniel Shipp. “Over his distinguished career, [Thorton] has shown an unwavering commitment and deep passion for worker safety, and serves as the ‘moral compass’ to make sure that risks to workers are appropriately identified and mitigated to ensure that workers go home safely to their family at the end of their shift.”

Thornton is a professional member of ASSE’s Greater Tidewater Chapter and is chair of ASSE’s Council on Professional Affairs. He was appointed by former Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to chair the OSHA Maritime Advisory Committee for Safety and Health and has received the U.S. Department of Labor’s Distinguished Service Award for his work with OSHA.
