Jim Smith, M.S., CSP, recently delivered a commencement address to the fall 2017 class of Southeastern Louisiana University. Delivered to more than 80 attendees and 16 graduates, Smith’s speech touched on three points: the student’s OSH degree, ASSE’s role in their future and their own personal challenges going forward.

“This is a degree that gives you so many options,” said Smith. “You have a choice of going into various industries to practice: insurance, government, manufacturing, construction, higher education, oil/gas/energy and others. The choices are limitless. Not many degrees can make the same statement. You get to pick one and see if you enjoy that industry. Explore those opportunities.”

In his speech, Smith highlighted the importance of ASSE and what it can offer recent graduates. He outlined the opportunities such as networking, involvement and job options, to name a few. “You have the same opportunities that I did through ASSE. You just need to take advantage of them and get involved,” said Smith.

Smith’s closing remarks were directed toward the students’ futures and how qualities such as teamwork, integrity and passion are necessary for one to succeed in the OSH profession.
