Jim Thornton Featured as AIHA Thought Leader

As part of its 75th anniversary, AIHA has launched its Thought Leaders Project to highlight the contributions of influential industrial hygienists by capturing their stories. These video stories offer snapshots of the profession and the association, each presenting a different perspective on the evolution of the profession and the efforts of industry leaders to navigate the changing field of industrial hygiene.

The first Thought Leaders video features Jim Thornton, CSP, CIH, director of health, safety and environment at Northrop Grumman Newport News. In the video, Thornton talks about how he entered the industrial hygiene profession, and offers advice to young professionals. Thornton highlights the importance of developing a relationship with a mentor, as well as the importance of learning and education. Thornton is chair of ASSE’s Governmental Affairs Committee, and a professional member of the Greater Tidewater Chapter. In 2012, he received the Academy of Industrial Hygiene’s Henry F. Smyth Jr. Award, which honors outstanding contributions to industrial hygiene.

AIHA’s Thought Leaders Project will run through May 2014, when the association will celebrate the history of industrial hygiene at its 2014 annual conference, AIHce.
