RegBrief Examines Walking-Working Surfaces Rule

OSHA’s final rule on walking and working surface (29 CFR 1910, Subparts D and I) requires employers to protect workers from fall hazards along unprotected sides or edges that are at least 4 ft above a lower level. The rule also contains specific requirements for both fixed and portable ladders, scaffolds, rope descent systems, manbolts and manhole steps, dockboards and other equipment that presents a fall hazard.

In ASSE’s RegBrief on the standard, Adele L. Abrams, J.D., the Society’s federal representative, examines those requirements in greater detail, shares key compliance dates and lists other OSHA standards affected by the changes.
