Tom Cecich on ASSE’s Strategic Vision, Challenges of OSH Profession

In a recent EHS Today article, 2016-17 ASSE President Tom Cecich, CSP, CIH, shared his thoughts about the Society and the OSH profession.

When asked what accomplishments he is most proud of, Cecich cites ASSE’s work to advance the OSH profession. “We worked really hard to focus on trying to transition what safety professionals do beyond compliance, and to look at providing value to organizations by reducing risk,” Cecich says. He also talks about the organization’s strategic priorities and the strides made in each of those four areas: member communities, education, standards and value of the safety profession.

Cecich also speaks candidly about ASSE’s series of recommendations for OSHA under the Trump Administration. The discussion touches on safety and health management programs, third-party auditing and closing the gap on public sector worker protection.

Finally, when asked what words he might offer those seeking to enter the field, Cecich explains the many ways the OSH profession is a rewarding career, “one that I’ve been able to give back . . . to help both the profession and future generations of safety professionals.”
